Back in 1966 our Principle Director John Melling left his Grammer School in Bristol
having decided to start work at the tender age of just 15, armed with a determination
to succeed in the his chosen industry - Glass & Glazing, never imagining that one day he
would be part of a company building Orangeries and Conservatories.
His apprenticeship began with a traditional specialist glass company W Goldman & Son in Newfoundland Street, Bristol and
within a few years John had gained practical skills in Glass Acid Embossing / Stained Glass Windows and Leading /
Glass processing / Glass Polishing and Bevelling / Glass Cutting and Handling.
By 1970 the company was the owned by HAT Group plc a large group of specialist subcontractors to the building
industry, John's father Ken Melling being a Director of the group, later to receive the MBE for his services
to the Construction Industry.
Goldman & Son became Bristol Glaziers and by then John had been given the responsibility of Contract Supervisor,
responsible for a team of over 20 glaziers operating over the whole of Somerset and South Wales glazing massive
housing developments, hospitals and schools throughout the region.
By the age of 20 John had moved back into the offices of Bristol Glaziers as Contract Estimator and began
designing, soon to design the direct glazing system employed in the tallest building in the fast expanding
City of Bristol.
1972 saw John as Assistant Manager of Bristol Glaziers and offered his own company to run in Stoke-on-Trent.
At 21 Potteries Glass was to be his responsibility, investment was made by the group in a new factory with
a gantry crane facility for glass handing, this new company became Tatlow Glass (Stoke) with a further
factory in Wolverhampton, the Glass Division had become one of the largest in the UK.
